Medication Management: A Framework

Altura Learning (Formerly Aged Care Channel) is proud to present their course Medication Management: A Framework designed to familiarise staff with their role in medication management using a systematic approach, which ensures both the safe use of medications and quality outcomes for the older person.

Most people residing in residential aged care will receive some sort of medication. It is imperative that medication administration is supported by a safe system to minimise the risk of harm to residents from potential errors.

Penny Kramer, Consultant Accredited Pharmacist specialising in Aged Care, is an expert in medication management and consulted with Altura Learning during the creation of this new Altura Learning course, which was launched on January 17, 2018. Medication Management: A Framework is based on the Guiding Principles for Medication Management in Residential Aged Care, which explains the requirements for a safe system of managing medication administration. This course also details the Nine Rights of Medication Administration, which are reinforced through the presentation of a case where medication error led to a person’s death.

Medication Management: A Framework is considered appropriate for every staff member who deals with medications as part of their role, including any staff members responsible for overseeing the medication system. This course is supported by a suite of learning resources, including a medication administration skills assessment and two medication maths tests: one aimed at care workers who may support residents with medication and one aimed at enrolled/registered nurses.
