Delivering Dementia and Cognitive Impairment Care
Course Description
This course aims to equip residential aged care staff with the knowledge and skills to provide safe, respectful, and person-centred care for individual’s living with dementia and cognitive impairment. Participants will learn to recognise changes in cognition, respond appropriately to behaviours, and support wellbeing and dignity for older people that they care for.
Learning Outcomes
After viewing this course, participants should be able to:
* Explain what cognitive impairment is and its impact on an individual
* Differentiate between delirium, dementia and depression
* Identify and reduce risks associated with cognitive impairment
* Recognise early signs of deterioration and respond promptly, safely and with dignity
* Identify behaviour triggers and apply non-restrictive behaviour support strategies before restrictive practices or psychotropic medications
* Work in partnership with the person and their supporters to inform person-centred care planning
