Restorative Care

Course Description

Functional decline among older adults is a major international aged care challenge. In Australia, national health data show that declines in mobility and activities of daily living (ADLs) are leading contributors to residential care entry and hospital readmissions. Similarly, in New Zealand, the NZ Health Survey and interRAI assessments consistently identify loss of independence in mobility and self‑care as drivers of increased care needs.

In the United Kingdom, research indicates that up to 40 % of older people experience measurable decline in functional ability within six months of hospital discharge or residential placement.

Restorative care — also called reablement, rehabilitation‑focused support, or restorative practice — is an evidence‑based approach designed to maximise physical function, maintain independence and reduce future service demand. Strong Australian, NZ and UK evidence shows that restorative care can:

* Reduce dependency on long‑term high intensity services

* Improve mobility and reduce fall‑related admissions

* Enhance quality of life and preserve autonomy

Course Aim: To build practical capability in restorative care that enhances mobility, independence and wellbeing for older adults across residential and community care. Participants will apply interdisciplinary, evidence‑based strategies consistent with Australian Strengthened Standards and international best‑practice frameworks.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

* Explain the evidence base for restorative care across Australia, NZ and the UK, including impacts on mobility, ADLs and service utilisation.
* Assess individual functional capacity using standardised tools and identify person‑centred goals that support independence.
* Plan and deliver structured restorative interventions, integrating allied health input where appropriate.
* Monitor and measure outcomes using functional indicators, and adjust care plans responsively.
* Demonstrate documentation and evaluation practices aligned with Standard 5 (Clinical Care) requirements and governance expectations under Standard 8.
* Apply continuous improvement frameworks to restorative practice, using data to inform service development and quality outcomes.
