Caring for People of English-Speaking Backgrounds
Course Description
Caring for people from English-speaking backgrounds involves recognising that even within seemingly familiar language and cultural groups, residents can have diverse values, beliefs, life experiences, and social needs. Care workers need to understand residents’ personal histories, family structures, communication preferences, health literacy, and social expectations to provide truly person-centred care. It includes using clear and respectful verbal and non-verbal communication, supporting independence, encouraging social and community connections, and collaborating with families to respect traditions and preferences. It also requires recognising potential barriers such as generational differences, social isolation, or health challenges, and adapting care to meet these needs effectively. Understanding how to care for English-speaking residents is important because it ensures that care is individualised, respectful, and effective.
